Maddy needed to get a haircut since the puppies were were matting her hair. Eleven puppie take their toll- Maddy has lost a lot of weight and has big hanging teats - she is not looking her best although her winning personality still shines through!
As you can see from the photos, the puppies change a lot this week. They have entered the socialization period and learning to interact with each other, other animals as well as people. To facilitate this, the pups move out of their whelping box (and out of my bedroom )and into the puppy playpen that we have set up in the hallway. The hallway is the busiest area in the house and we are able to interact with the puppies many, many times each day. The puppies have had lots of visitors this week (29) - we try to make sure that the puppies meet at least fifty different people of all ages, races, shapes and sizes so that they are comfortable around all sorts of people by the time they come to their new homes.
The pups are eating regular, softened puppy food twice a day now. When I serve them food, I call "puppy, puppy, puppy", this is a sort of "wolf-call" that the puppies will respond to later. Hopefully this will make training easier for the families later on. I have also started brushing them in a relaxing way while they are nursing- thereby equating being brushed with something pleasant.
The puppies are now able to hop and run a little bit, they are also learning to pounce!
Their personalities are starting to show. They are all happy, sweet and playful. Some are braver than others, some are more cuddly, some are more active, some are more calm. All have had there first adventures outside of their puppy playpen and in the great ourdoors.
